Mother Nature tried her hand once again to steal the purse for the weekends action, but the ace of spades belonged to the track promoters and anxious fans that wanted to see great live dirt action. After a 20 minutes of light showers, the skies cleared and the sun poked out as the evening pushed to dark.
With the track still moist from the brief shower, drivers tested their marks in qualifying, putting their elbows to good use for a quick time. Jamey Boland, driving the #232 Boland Performance Chevy, raised many eyebrows with his solid qualifying effort. Justin McRee, qualifying last, but took the the pole with a time just over 14.1. Beating out Jamey and the high spirited Boland Performance team looking for some good luck.
When Heat #1 started, the track surface was fantastic, giving fans the usual 3 sometimes 4 wide racing that is beloved by all at "the action track of the south", Whynot Motorsports Park. Justin McRee, racing his brand new High Roller chassis, looked to be the class of the field as he held off the seasoned veterans, but never rusty,of #760 JimBo McDuffie, and #221 of Lucky Keeton to bring home the win in Heat 1.
Heat #2 showcased two time feature winner for this year #118, Coca Cola Racing family, Randy Boyd as he out dueled fellow Trak-Star Race Cars chassis driver Jamey Boland for the win with a late hard charge from the #C11 of Cliff Williams & Heath Minor.
Jamey Boland, son of 3 time track champion, "The Iron" Mike Boland, has been one of several young guns who has progressively improved with seat time. Boland's best finish in a feature this year has been a fifth place finish he got while racing at "The Mag", up the road in Columbus Ms.
Jamey ran door to door all night, competing with the same drivers his father competed with for so many years at the 3/10 of a mile oval dirt track. Other drivers even commented on how Jamey has showed a lot of patients in his young racing career, and seems to soak in more knowledge week after week.
The feature started with some of Whynot's best drivers in the front. Talents that included names like Boyd, McDuffie, Keeton, Ratcliff (#48The Rebel) and Boland. For 2 very exciting laps, the best of Whynot, then & now, battled it out for the top spot. Justin McRee looked as though he might break #118 of Randy Boyd from scoring his 3rd feature win in a row, keeping just ahead of the eager drivers looking for a win this season.
As racing luck would have it, Wiley Williams and newcomer Dustin Turner found themselves in a tuff and unwanted position after spin outs that were off course enough to hold the officials from throwing the yellow flag, and kept competition under green. The leader, McRee, was running full throttle thru turn 3 and 4, unaware of any slower cars around him. The black #19 of Dustin Turner was still trying to race back to speed, cut sideways out of 4, over corrected, lost grip & slid directly into a charging McRee. Justin nose dived hard into the front stretch wall after the flag stand, bouncing off and spinning a complete 180* before coming to a stand still on the top side facing the backstretch.
Drivers dipped and dodged into any hole possible, trying to avoid McRee & his mishaps. Jamey Boland, with the bottom already took, had very little opportunity to avoid the accident as he slammed into the front quarter panel of the already damaged High Roller Chassis, ending both competitors night.
It was not going to be easy to hold off the likes of a hard charging #27, Bo Haarla's Autoplex sponsored late model driver Larry Murphy, but CocA Cola's favorite driver Randy Boyd was able to not only hold off the hot Murphy but also Cliff Williams in the C11 car. Boyd claimed his third feature win in a row and put a nice cushion on his points lead over Larry Murphy(28points behind).
On another note, the #2 Larry's World Self Storage Late Model driver Tyler Burgess out of Quitman Ms., and a student at Mississippi State University , continues to make improvements finishing in the top 10. Tyler sits 6th in points tied with fellow young gun Jamey Boland. #09 Robinson Electric driver Daniel Bridgmon has quietly put together a solid season as he sits 3rd in points, only 38 behind points leader Randy Boyd.
Action returns this weekend at Whynot Motorsports Park, featuring the I-20 crates. Gates open @3, racing @7! You can follow Yellowcautionflag on Facebook and @FlagofCaution on Twitter for all the latest racing news.
